La photo de 1985

French Short Novel for Pre-Intermediate Learners (A2)

Two trains, forty years, one photograph.

On 18 April two trains arrive in Paris: Sam's father Tunde from London and Léa's mother Hélène from Lyon. They have not seen each other for forty years. Three days before, a box of old photos turns up a picture of Jojo's bike couriers in front of the workshop in June 1985. Next to Hélène stands a young man who looks exactly like Sam. A short, adult novel for pre-intermediate learners of French (A2).

Read chapter 1: Six jours avant

Dimanche 12 avril. Il fait beau sur le canal. Les arbres ont des petites feuilles vertes. Le printemps est arrivé.

Léa est dans l'atelier. Elle ne travaille pas. Elle range. Elle range encore. Elle a déjà rangé trois fois. Dans six jours, sa mère arrive. Et le père de Sam aussi. Le même jour.

Son téléphone sonne. Un numéro inconnu.

— Allô ?

— Mademoiselle Garnier ? C'est Paul Ferrand. Du marché de Vanves. Les photos.

— Monsieur Ferrand ! Bonjour !

— Venez à mon stand. Ce matin. Avec votre ami anglais.

— Pourquoi ?

— Le samedi après-midi, après le marché, je regarde les boîtes avec Charles. À la maison de retraite. Photo par photo. Hier, on a trouvé quelque chose. Pour vous. Et pour lui.
